Service Description
SKILL LEVEL Intermediate/advanced PREREQUISITE Ability to center 2–4 lbs of clay and work independently on the wheel INSTRUCTOR Blake Keys of Key & Kiln ABOUT THE CLASS The Advanced Series is for potters who already know how to throw and are ready to go further. This is a focused, technique-driven course covering more difficult forms. Each session includes a demonstration followed by extended throwing time with individual guidance. WEEK 1 Tall & Thin : More from Your Clay Learn the techniques that get more height and control out of each pound of clay: rib work, compressing and stretching walls, and maintaining even thickness as you go taller. WEEK 2 Plates & Flat Forms Throwing low, wide, flat forms is one of the more technically demanding skills at the wheel. Learn how to prevent warping, create clean rims, and develop a variety of plate ware from dinner plates to serving platters. WEEK 3 Lidded Jars : Honey Pots, Moon Jars & Butter Bells Throw multiple lidded jar styles in one session. Focus on skills required to measure, throw and trim matching lids. WEEK 4 Big Throwing : Bowls, Vases & Jars (5 lbs+) Develop the physical technique and mental approach for throwing large-scale pieces. Learn how to open wide without collapsing, support tall walls, and work efficiently with significant weight. WEEK 5 All One Piece : Planter pots, Incense holders, & To - Go mugs Throwing multi-part pieces in single, cohesive form allowing you to trim and refine later. Learn how to open with footers, close with tops, avoid thick areas and prevent cracking. WEEK 6 Skill Builder & Studio Maintenance A full throwing session with no assignments. Individual project support and guidance. Important skills required to be confident on your own in a studio, including reclaim, glazing and mixing techniques, & more. INCLUDED Instruction, stoneware clay, tools, open studio access, bisque fire, glaze, and glaze fire LOCATION & TIME This class will meet in the Sandpoint Ceramics Community Clay Studio (suite 206) on 6 consecutive Mondays from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. -Non-members will store, trim, and glaze in the Community Clay Studio. -Members will store, trim, and glaze in the Member's Studio (or glaze in the Community Clay Studio).
