Service Description

Learn the basics of handbuilding with clay in these weekly 2-hour sessions! Recommended for ages 8 and up. Clay+water=mud! Younger kiddos usually just want to squish and play with clay, so we ask that students who register are able to sit in one place, follow directions, work independently, and clean up their work table, tools, and floor. As a homeschooling mom of 2 and prior high school Ceramics and Art teacher, Jamie understands the value of high-quality creative education that nurtures critical thinking, problem solving, direction following, and creative expression. In these group classes (Homeschool Levels 1, 2, & the Club), these principles will be emphasized while students learn how to build with their hands to create a variety of projects such as mugs, bowls, pots, plates, trays, boxes, vases, sculptures, lanterns, wall art, and more! Creative freedom is always highly encouraged and supported. Homeschool Level 1 is a 6-week session recommended for ages 8-17 that meets once weekly for 2 hours. Students will learn the basic history of ceramics, the stages of clay, and how to safely and effectively handle clay. The first 5 sessions will focus on the 3 foundations of handbuilding; pinching, coil-building, and slab-building. Students will create 5 projects, including a pinch pot, sgraffito plate, coil bowl, wall tile or trinket tray with 3D features, and a slab mug. The 6th session introduces glazing. Students may select from our collection of over 85 glazes! Glazing may be completed during Open Studio sessions. Projects will be take-home ready within about 2 weeks of glazing. All glazing must be completed within 30 days of the 6th session. Missed sessions may not be rescheduled or refunded. If a class is missed, the student may make-up the missed project if a seat is available in the following Homeschool Level 1 class (classes rotate every 6-8 weeks). Clay, tools, and glaze included. All clay is stoneware, so projects are safe for food, the microwave, dishwasher, and oven. Most glazes are safe for food, however, some are not, so guidance will be provided when glazing. Wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty and please bring your own hand towel! Level 1 may be repeated. Students who complete Level 1 are eligible to move on to Level 2. Upon completion of any level, all students are eligible to participate in our pottery sales! Students who complete levels 1 and 2 are eligible to participate in our Emerging Artist Program!
