Service Description

Join Blake Keys of Key & Kiln and learn to throw plates on the Potter's Wheel! Push your wheel skills further in this advanced level class and learn to throw strong, balanced plateware. Emphasis will be placed on intentional form, even compression, and building structural strength to minimize warping and cracking. During this two-hour class, students will: • Prepare clay specifically for plate ware • Learn production throwing techniques for wide forms • Practice rim control and even compression • Throw two plates on the wheel • Explore strategies for maintaining flat, balanced plates both on and off the wheel • Learn proper handling techniques to move and dry plateware without warping. Demonstrations will be followed by guided practice and individual support. In addition to the plates thrown during class, students will be provided with leather-hard plates to practice trimming and finishing, reinforcing techniques discussed in the session. This is an advanced class that will meet in the Sandpoint Ceramics Community Clay Studio (suite 206). Students should be comfortable centering 2–4 lbs of clay, pulling consistent walls, and working independently on the wheel. Non-members will store, trim, and glaze in the Community Clay Studio. Members will store, trim, and glaze in the Member's Studio (or glaze in the Community Clay Studio). Contact Jamie for your 10% membership discount. Stoneware clay, tools, open studio, bisque fire, glaze, and glaze fire included. Wear clothes and shoes that can get dirty and please bring your own towel or apron. This class serves as a prerequisite for membership in our Member's Studio. Please provide at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel. Refunds will be limited to $30 per person unless we can fill your seat.
